What is PRF?

Platelet-rich fibrin is created using your own blood. Your blood is drawn and processed until it is rich in platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells. Platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells are essential to the body’s wound healing process. When PRF is injected into the skin or the scalp, it triggers cell growth and tissue regeneration for 10-12 days. This procedure can improve fine lines, wrinkles, folds, scarring, volume loss, pigmentation, and skin texture and tone. It can also initiate hair growth.

What is the difference between PRF and PRP?

Like PRF, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is created using your own blood. However, PRP is processed to make it less rich in white blood cells than PRF. The way PRP is processed also does not allow the formation of a fibrin matrix. Because of this, PRP only triggers cell growth and tissue regeneration for a few minutes rather than 10-12 days.

Who is a candidate for PRF treatments?

Anyone would like to improve fine lines, wrinkles, folds, scarring, volume loss, pigmentation, and skin texture and tone. Anyone that would like to treat hair loss.

Before and After Images

What are pre-care instructions before a PRF treatment?

Come hydrated and preferably NOT on an empty stomach. Avoid caffeine and alcohol and exercise the day of the procedure.

What can be expected during a PRF treatment?

Several tubes of your blood will be drawn and processed until it is rich in platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells. The area being treated will first be numbed with numbing cream. The PRF will be injected using a small needle and will require multiple injections. The treatment typically takes 45 minutes-1 hour.

What is the pain or discomfort associated with PRF treatments?

During the blood draw, you will experience a slight pinch when the needle is inserted. Topical numbing makes the treatment comfortable. After the treatment is over, the skin may feel warm, tight, or irritated. The skin may appear pink or mildly red as if you were experiencing a sunburn. An ice pack can be used as needed to reduce warmth, redness, and inflammation.

What is the downtime after PRF?

At Skin Deep, we define downtime as not being able to work or go out in public. Downtime is unique for every patient, and typically PRF treatment has no downtime. Warmth, redness (tingling/stinging), inflammation (swelling) tenderness-soreness can occur that usually resolves within 24 hours along with the warm temperature. Red marks disappear after two weeks of bruising. If you experience any discomfort during those first few days following your treatment, Arnica gel and capsules can help heal the bruising faster.

Refrain from touching the treated area for 4-6 hours after treatment. You may wash the treated area using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water the morning after treatment. Avoid excess alcohol consumption, smoking, exercise, UV light, and heat (saunas, steam, tanning beds, hot showers, etc.) for 24 hours after treatment. While the skin is healing, use gentle skincare products and avoid chemical and physical exfoliation.

When will I see the results?

Many patients notice a “healthy glow” once the skin has healed. Results will continue to improve over time. Many patients report experiencing a healthy glow 24-72 hrs after treatment. Results will continue to improve over time. 2 to 6 wks, spaced 4 to 6 wks apart, multiple times/yr for optimal results

How many PRF treatments will I need?

The number of PRF treatments required will depend on the person’s needs. Most people will require 3-4 treatments for desired results every 4-6 weeks. It is recommended that 2-4 treatments are needed every year to maintain the desired results.

How long will the results from a PRF procedure last?

The longevity of the results is dependent on how quickly each person naturally breaks down collagen. Results will last as long as 2-4 maintenance treatments are performed each year.
